It’s Okay, Young Man, to Not Be Athletic

From a young age, boys are often handed a script: Be strong. Be fast. Be athletic. You're expected to excel on the field, dominate the court, or at least enjoy sports. If you don’t, you might feel like you're somehow "less than" or not measuring up to what a “real man” should be.
But let me tell you something powerful: It's okay to not be athletic.
Being a man has never been about touchdowns or trophies. It’s about character, courage, and consistency. It’s about respect, kindness, and integrity. You don't need to run the fastest mile to be strong. You don’t need to shoot a perfect three-pointer to be respected. You don’t need a jersey to have worth.
You were fearfully and wonderfully made.
Maybe your gifts are in art, music, leadership, tech, design, writing, building, teaching, or problem-solving. Maybe you’re the one who helps your siblings with homework, who listens well, who leads with peace instead of pride. That’s strength, too.
There is no one way to be a man. There is no one mold to fit.
Athletics may build teamwork and confidence, and that’s great for those called to it, but it’s not the only path to growth or leadership. If sports aren’t your thing, guess what? You still matter. You're still gifted. You're still a part of the team, God’s team.
So here’s your permission, young man:
You don’t have to pretend. You don’t have to perform. You don’t have to explain.
You just have to keep showing up as your full, authentic self and trust that God didn’t make a mistake when He made you.
You are enough. You are valuable. And you are seen.
